Puzzle 3
Root backcombing
Separate a section about 1 cm thick. Hold it firmly at a 90-degree angle upward, or even slightly toward the face. Apply hairspray or a texturizing powder to help the backcombing hold together. The comb shouldn't pass all the way through the section. The teeth should stay hidden inside the hair. Start backcombing about 5 cm away from the scalp and slowly work your way down, gently pressing the backcombing toward the roots.
In textured hairstyles and curled updos, I use root backcombing on almost every section above the occipital bone. For sleek styles, or styles with just a touch of texture at the crown, I switch to a much softer version instead. Check out the Air Backcombing lesson to learn that technique.
